The Craniosacral system is named for the bones involved: The skull, (cranial), the vertebral
column, the sacrum and the coccyx (sacral). The anatomy of the Craniosacral system
includes: The meningeal membranes, the osseous structures, all the connective tissue
structures related to the membranes (muscles, ligaments, tendons, fasciae, the cerebral
spinal fluid (CSF) and the structures to help resorb and contain CSF.
Like other body systems (cardiovascular, respiratory, etc.) The Craniosacral system has a
motion of its own: The Craniosacral Rhythm. Everything in your body responds to this and
can be felt anywhere on your body. The body is comprised of varying densities of tissue,
fluid and CST treats them all, the body as a whole.
What Is CranioSacral Therapy?
Craniosacral Therapy is a manual therapy aimed to release tension, relieve pain and improve
overall body function and health. Therapists use gentle palpation skills to release restrictions
and tension in the fascia, muscles, bones and organs. The focus is on deep tissue release
(although light touch is used) for improved functions of the body as a whole. Releasing the
restrictions helps the body self- correct, relax and let the central nervous system and all
connections to it, heal, strengthen resistance to disease and eliminate pain.
